Opal is an app designed to help people take control of their screen time so they can focus better, sleep more soundly, and spend more quality time offline. For families, Opal now includes a simple way for parents to set boundaries around app use on their child’s device — and lock those settings in with a secure PIN code.
Once set up, your child won’t be able to change or turn off the restrictions you've chosen. You decide which apps to block (like social media, games, or video platforms) and when they should be off-limits — for example, during bedtime, school hours, or family time. Opal takes care of the rest.
Below are step-by-step instructions to help you set up Opal on your child’s device and add a PIN code to protect the settings you’ve chosen.
Follow these steps to lock in your settings and ensure your child can’t change them:
You’ll be able to unlock and access the Opal app at any time by entering your PIN. To remove the PIN, simply return to the Apple Settings and disable it.
Opal offers pre-set focus Sessions and App Limits to help kids develop healthy screen habits. These can be easily customized to suit your family’s routine.
You can find and activate these under the Blocks tab in the app:
These Sessions can be adjusted to reflect your family’s schedule. For example, if your family dinner is at a different time or on different days, you can edit the “Dinner with Family” Session accordingly. More about Sessions here.
You can increase or decrease this daily limit depending on your child’s needs. Learn more about App Limits here.
